 You're a reactor core alone in the dark. Everything else, you build.

Bolt arms, rings, and guns outward from your core into a sprawling 3D battle-station then hold it against endless waves of scavengers and regenerating Hive swarms. 

Mount railguns, flak, chain-lightning Tesla coils and piercing beams. Research new tech, fire captain's abilities, scramble fighter squadrons, or drop into a turret and shoot back yourself. Carriers spew fighters, dreadnoughts charge siege cannons, and the void  itself throws black holes and ion storms at you.

Build it. Arm it. Don't let them reach the core.
